20 Best of 2010

End of the year, time for the best of. No real order -- all these songs are awesome. Also, didn't have time for youtube links because it's annoying to embed videos. Feel free to download based on the fact that all these songs are awesome, or give them a preview in youtube.

- Beast Mode - B.o.B -- Pure fire from B.o.B. The song itself is a bit angry, but the beat is sweet and B.o.B really kills it with the lyrics -- "I could use a wish, Hayley where you at?"

Download - Beast Mode

- Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons -- Okay the single was technically released in December 2009, but the album came out in February so I'm counting it. This song is unbelievable. Sort of a fast, folk-y, indie rock that comes together perfectly. If you love this song as much as you should, check out "The Cave" and "Winter Winds," also from Mumford & Sons' "Sigh No More" album.

- Fuck You - Cee-lo Green -- Probably the single catchiest song I've ever heard. If you haven't heard it yet, don't even bother searching on youtube and just download it, I can almost guarantee you'll like it.

- The Show Goes On - Lupe Fiasco -- I'm a huge Lupe fan, and even though this song probably couldn't stand up to the stuff off his debut album and also sounds made for the radio (which I despise. the radio, not the song), I love it. It's uses the chorus of Modest Mouse's "Float On" for the sample, and Lupe is as solid as ever on the lyrics. The second song is an amazing one featuring John Legend, which makes for a fantastic collaboration.

- Radio - Chris Akinyemi -- Without a doubt the smoothest song of the year. He has a great voice and basically campaigns against the radio (which, if you didn't get before, I hate) and the commercialization of the music industry. Awesome

- Black and Yellow - Wiz Khalifa -- I'm sure you've heard the song, but if you haven't it's great. Not sure how I feel about Wiz in general, but if you're looking for a song to drive around to look no further. Even though it's the anthem of the Steelers now...

- She Go, I Go (feat. Chiddy Bang) - XV -- Great track off of XV's recent mixtape. Not the most inspirational lyrics, but the beat is nasty and it features Chiddy -- what more can you ask?

- The Black 'n Gold (feat. Sam Sparro) - Wale -- Great song using Sam Sparro's "Black and Gold." No relation to Wiz's song. Wale takes an awesome song and makes a perfect rap remix.

- White Sky - Vampire Weekend -- If I could put the whole "Contra" album on here I would. But since that isn't possible, here are a few of my favorites. For some reason I just can't get enough of Vampire Weekend.

Download - Holiday (yes, the one from all of those commercials)

- The Other Side (feat. Cee-lo Green and B.o.B) - Bruno Mars -- Three of the best new artists team up on one song? C'mon. That doesn't seem fair. And the outcome is gold.

- Random Song that Doesn't Fit - Gabriel Stark -- I've never heard of this guy before, but he takes Mraz's "I'm Yours" and turns it into a fantastic rap song. Awesome lyrics too, if you give it a listen make sure you hear what he's saying.

- Take Her Home - Rock City -- Before a month ago, I had no clue who these guys were. But they combine rap, hip-hop, and Caribbean influences to make amazing music. Here are two of my favorite:

- The Way You Are (feat. Lupe Fiasco) - Bruno Mars -- It's very possible a lot of you are sick of this song at this point, but Lupe goes in twice on it and kills it. Again, I have a Fiasco bias, but he makes an overplayed (but still catchy) song something you have to listen to.

- I Ain't Scared - Tayyib Ali -- Awesome lyrics and really smooth beat. His whole mixtape was really good; this one was definitely my favorite, but the second download is an awesome remix of The Black Eyed Peas' "Where is the Love?".

- All of the Lights - Kanye West -- Kanye's new album was one of the best reviewed albums ever. Surprising, a little, but there are some awesome tracks from it. My favorite without a doubt is this one that features Rihanna

- Trap of Mirrors - The Pass -- Sounds remarkably like Passion Pit, but maybe that's because I don't know many synth-falsetto bands. Any comparison to Passion Pit can't be a bad thing though, right? Amazing song

- G.R.I.N.D. (Get Ready It's a New Day) - Asher Roth -- Awesome song with fantastic lyrics from Roth. Uplifting message, uptempo beat. Game over.

- Ready to Go - The Dean's List -- Great song from Boston-based band the Dean's List. Sounds a bit like Chiddy, but background vocals set them apart. They might not be so great in concert, but this song is absolutely awesome.

- You Got It (feat. Wale) - J. Cole -- J. Cole's whole new "Friday Night Lights" mixtape is unreal, so if you don't have it get it right now. This is probably my favorite song of them all. J. Cole always kills it, and Wale is a fantastic feature.

- Club Certified (feat. Akon) - Kylian Mash -- Unbelievably catchy party song. For some reason any song that features Akon seems to get my attention, so here are a few more awesome ones from this year.

Probably missing some great songs from this year, so if you want to let me know I can update the list. Hope everyone had a great year.

Almost December...

Friday Night Lights - J. Cole -- New mixtape from Jermaine, and it's unreal. This guy's awesome. My favorite song is probably "You Got It (feat. Wale)," but download the whole cd, it's really worth it.

Zodiak Name - Shake the Baron -- These guys have a Vampire Weekend feel to them, and if you know me you know I'm a huge Vampire Weekend feel. They sound a little bit more mellow than VW, but still really good indie rock. Check it out

Download - Zodiak Name (Right Click and go to "Save as")

Take Me Away - Fortune Family -- Great sample, great lyrics. The chorus is real catchy, and anytime a rapper makes a Kevin Youkilis, Kenny Powers, and Antoine Dodson reference in one verse it gets my ear.

Rock City - The Best of Rock City -- These guys are from the Virgin Islands, and they combine island music and attitude with hip-hop - it really works for me. I really like the whole cd, my favorite might be "Take Her Home" but I'm not sure, it's all really good. If you like it download one or two of the cd's.

Y No Regresas - Juanes (Youtube) -- Juanes has a new album coming out December 7th, though I'm sure all of you already knew that / pre-ordered the cd...right? If you haven't been keeping up with the Columbian music scene, check out Juanes' new single, it's fantastic.

Africa - Karl Wolf (Youtube) -- This song samples Toto's "Africa," and it's awesome. Not new at all, but still fantastic; if you don't have it yet definitely download it.

Genre blending

Get What You Give - Rich Kid Sound System -- This is a fantastic song that sounds like an indie rock hit combined with some good rap. Really, really good, definitely download.

A Little Bit Of Time - Rich Kid Sound System -- Just like their other song, this one has a great hook and some great rap. RKSS only has these two songs up to now, but I can't wait for more.

J. Cole - I'm Coming Home (youtube) -- Gotta love J. Cole. This is the first leak off his upcoming "Friday Night Lights" mixtape, and if it says anything for the mixtape as a whole it's gonna be awesome.

Tayyib Ali - Eighteen (mixtape) -- Great mixtape, and he's only 18 years old. Pretty impressive stuff. My favorite song off of it is probably this, but all of the songs are pretty good.

Too Fake (feat. Chiddy Bang) - Big Sean (youtube) -- Anything with Chiddy is usually going to be good, but this is awesome. Big Sean does a great job. Off of Big Sean's mixtape from a month or so ago.

Ice Cold - That Kid C-G (no youtube) - Nothing too fancy, but a chorus that will get stuck in your head backed up by some good rap.

Download - Ice Cold (right click and go to "save as")

Dark Fantasy - Kanye West (youtube) -- Kind of a weird song, but what do you expect from this guy. Still, I kind of like it...

Random:

I Think Ur A Contra - Vampire Weekend -- Definitely my favorite band, and this is just an unbelievably beautiful song. No rap, so don't expect any, but if you're looking for good music and haven't heard much of Vampire Weekend you're missing out.

Peace.

We are not losers. We are Lasers

Lupe's album finally got a release date, March 2011! Still a while away even though he finished the cd a few months ago, but I'm already pumped for "Lasers"

- The Show Goes On - Lupe Fiasco -- First official single off of his upcoming cd. Lupe samples Modest Mouse's "Float On," and he makes a really catchy song. A little bit too radio-friendly for me, but it's still awesome.

- I'm Beaming - Lupe Fiasco -- This song has been out for a while, but it's awesome. We went to a Lupe/B.o.B. concert during the summer and this was probably my favorite of the ones he did.

- I Gotcha (ft. Jack Johnson) - Lupe Fiasco -- Fantastic combination of Lupe's "I Gotcha" and Jack Johnson's "If I Had Eyes"

- Make Her Mine - Mayer Hawthorne (ft. Intuition) -- A great combination of r&b and rap. No youtube link, sorry, but definitely download, this song is great.

- Fade - Cal (youtube) -- Normally I hate autotune, but these guys use it and make it sound awesome. This is a song that can get stuck in your head real fast, so be warned.

- That Tree (ft. Kid Cudi) - Snoop Dogg (youtube) -- For some reason I haven't seen this song even though it's been out for a while, but it's pretty great. Cudi does a great job on the chorus

- Dr. Feel Good - Travie McCoy (youtube) -- Of course everyone's heard "Billionaire," but I like this song a lot more. Super catchy. FYI, we went to a Cudi concert at Babson and Travie performed. He was horrible. He's really not that good. Though he does have a few good songs. (Plus, he's not as bad as Dosage...)

Throwback:

- Ocean Avenue - Yellowcard (youtube) -- This song came up on shuffle on my 11 hour flight back from BA the other day, and I absolutely love it. Definitely brings back the middle school memories.

They make music in England?

Before the British music, here's some stuff from home:

- Bright Eyes (Demo) -- Vonnegutt - Kind of strange lyrics, but it's a really catchy song. Give it a listen, I bet you'll enjoy it.

- The Dean's List - If you haven't heard of them, they're a rap group from Boston, and they've got some great songs. Here are three of them for you to check out and download.

Download - No Sleep (Right-click and go to "save link as")

- Turn Around (5, 4, 3, 2, 1) - Flo Rida (youtube) -- I heard this song and immediately dismissed it as another annoying Flo Rida song. But then I was told by someone whose opinion I value that it was actually good. So I listened again, and unfortunately it kind of grew on me...so give it a chance

Now some music from across the pond:

- If You Got The Money - Jamie T (youtube) -- This song isn't new, but it's fantastic. If you like the style listen to "Sheila" and "Sticks and Stones," two of his other better songs.

- Won't Go Quietly - Example (youtube) -- I hadn't heard of this guy before about a week ago, but after hearing one of his songs I was pretty hooked. He combines rap with music that you can dance with, and it comes out fantastically. Listen to Watch the Sun Come Up as well, it's great.

Then think this one over: Where are all the baby squirrels?

Canciones

- I Heart NY (feat. Joell Ortiz) - Samuel -- This song is amazing. Ortiz adds a verse to Samuel's hit "I Heart NY," and it goes perfectly with the original. When I like a song with a Yankee's shout out in it, you know it has to be good.

Download - I Heart NY (feat. Joell Ortiz)

- In for the Kill (feat. Kanye West) - La Roux (youtube) -- The original song was pretty catchy, and Kanye adds a verse to the middle that is pretty good. Not as catchy (or damn annoying) as "Bulletproof," but give it a listen and you'll probably like it.

- Random Song That Doesn't Fit - Gabriel Stark -- I've never heard of this guy before, but this is a great college song (I would know...) - listen to the lyrics. Stark goes over "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, and it comes out sounding amazing. No youtube link, but download it and you won't regret it.

- Jay, 50, and Weezy - Dee-1 -- You've got to have some confidence to write a rap critiquing three of the big names. Catch song with a pretty good message.

- G.R.I.N.D. (Get Ready It's A New Day) - Asher Roth (youtube) -- Not really new, but this is a pretty great song. Really catchy.

The site got mad at me for posting the link (apparently Roth just uploaded to iTunes so it's no longer free). Too bad. Still worth 1.29 though...

That's it for now, be back later this week. Support Chiddy Bang's new album on iTunes, too.

Peace

New Tunes

- Stoned (Feat. Del the Funky Homosapien) -- Chris Young the Rapper -- Young is coming out with a new album called 1991 that is supposed to be a throw-back to the "golden era" of rap, and this song sounds like it definitely could have been written back then. No youtube link, but this song is really really good, take my word for it and download.

- Marry You - Bruno Mars -- Bruno Mars is awesome.

- The Abrahammer - Whoop Whoop (Lil' Wayne x Blink 182) -- I don't like Lil Wayne. But Blink 182 is pretty awesome, and I find myself liking this song. No youtube link, but give it a download, it's only like two minutes long. Cross between "Mrs. Officer" by Wayne and "What's My Age Again?" by Blink 182.

Download - Whoop Whoop (for this one you have to right click and go to "save as", sorry)

- Relaxation (feat. Omen and Fashawn) - J. Cole (youtube) -- Not sure if I love this song, but it's still some good J. Cole. There's no chorus really, so don't expect one.

- From Above - Ben Folds and Nick Hornby -- Some alternative music now. Ben Folds' new album just came out, and it's awesome. The poet Nick Hornby wrote the lyrics and Folds put them to music, so it ends up being fantastic melodies and awesome stories. This is one of the better songs on the cd, and the story it tells is kind of cool. Give it a listen, and if you like it get the album on itunes, it's worth it.

Chiddy

Chiddy Bang's new album "The Preview" comes out on October 12th, so in homage to the man here are some of his leaks off the new album and Xaphoon's new stuff. These songs are all fantastic, so it's recommended that you download them. All of them.

- Old Ways - Chiddy Bang

- All Things Go - Chiddy Bang

- Bad Day - Chiddy Bang -- Kind of a negative song, but it's pretty fantastic. No youtube link, but download it if you like any of their other songs.

- Here We Go (feat. Q-tip) - Chiddy Bang (youtube) - Great song that should be on the album when it comes out

- The Good Life - Chiddy Bang (youtube) - Not at all related to the Kanye song. Still great though.

- Round 2 - The Cataracs (youtube) - Not Chiddy, but this is a great dance song. Definitely download it. I'm becoming a pretty big Cataracs fan after all that their new music recently.

If you like our music follow our blog, the link to do that is just on the right side of the page, it only takes a second.
